Spring is the best time to plant bare-root nursery stock. A spring planting allows the plant to grow for an entire growing season, becoming well established in its new soil home.

Are the needles sharp like the blue spruce or are they of a softer texture?

The needles are sharp on spruce trees. The new growth in spring is soft. If you want a soft needle you would need to look at the fir trees.
