In North America, Cedar is sometimes used as a general name for several tree species, including the Eastern Red Cedar. The Eastern Red Cedar is a Juniper with prickly foliage. The Northern White Cedar is a Thuja, also known as the American Arborvitae, which displays soft, pliable and scaly foliage.
